Ode to Music and Literature
Oil on Canvas

A quiet homage to the 19th-century still life, this painting gathers a musician’s and writer’s tools into a single, contemplative scene. Old leather-bound books, a well-worn flute, curling sheets of music, and an open journal glow against the dark ground, their edges picked out in careful detail. The brass candlestick, quill, and inkwell suggest the moment just after inspiration—the tools are at rest, but the air still feels charged with ideas.
Inspired by the trompe-l’oeil tradition and art of Harnett, I wanted to experience the weight and texture of objects that outlive their owners: instruments, pages, bindings, and wax that quietly hold our stories long after the music fades and the candle burns down.
